IPC Councilors

IPC Councilors play an important role in the work of IPC. Councilors serve in an advisory capacity and lend their global expertise on psoriasis research, treatment, and education to support all IPC programs, events, and initiatives. Matias Maskin, MD

Dr. Matias Maskin is Assistant Professor at the Section of Dermatology, Department of Medicine, Centro de Educacion Medica e Investigaciones Clinicas (CEMIC) University, at Buenos Aires. He specializes in internal medicine and dermatology at the University of Buenos Aires and serves as Chief of Dermatology and Coordinator of the psoriasis section at the Instituto Universitario CEMIC. Dr. Maskin is a founding member of the Latin American Society of Psoriasis (SOLAPSO), is active in psoriasis education programs with SOLAPSO in Argentina, and is part of the SOLAPSO Biosimilars Consensus in Argentina. A member of IPC's Latin America working group, Dr. Maskin has authored national and international publications, has served as an investigator for many psoriasis clinical trials, and has participated in many national and international congress presentations pertaining to psoriasis.

Associate Professor Peter Foley graduated MBBS, BMedSc from Monash University in 1987, and MD from The University of Melbourne in 1996. He completed his dermatology training in Melbourne, obtaining Fellowship of the Australasian College of Dermatologists in 1997. He is Director of Research at the Skin Health Institute and the Head of Dermatology Research at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne. He currently holds the position of Associate Professor, Department of Medicine at The University of Melbourne. In addition to running a busy private practice, he is a visiting medical officer to the Photobiology, Dermatology Biologics, and Dermatology Investigation clinics at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne, and the Phototherapy and Biologics clinics at the Skin Health Institute.

His interests include psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, hidradenitis suppurativa, photosensitivity disorders, and non-surgical management of nonmelanoma skin cancers. Associate Professor Foley is Australia’s only councilor on the International Psoriasis Council, is co-convener of the Australasian Psoriasis Registry, is Co-convenor, Australian Psoriasis Treatment Goals,is a former steering committee member of the Group for Research and Assessment of Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis GRAPPA), a former member of the Scientific Research & Academic Committees, The Australasian College of Dermatologists,and is a founding member of the Australasian Psoriasis Collaboration. He is participating in the NPS MedicineWise bDMARD program, is part of the My Psoriatic Arthritis Expert Advisory Group, has joined the International Dermatology Outcome Measures (IDEOM) Psoriatic Arthritis Musculo-Skeletal Symptoms workgroup, and is on the Board of the Photomedicine Society. He remains a longstanding member on Cancer Council Australia’s National Skin Cancer Committee and was part of the writing group for the revision of Keratinocyte Carcinoma Guidelines. He is a Past-President of Skin & Cancer Foundation Inc.

He has been an investigator in over 140 clinical trials and has over 130 published manuscripts.

Georg Stingl, MD

Georg Stingl received his residency training in dermatovenerology at the Medical School of Vienna’s University. After working as a postdoctoral fellow and, later, as a guest scientist at the US National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD, he became staff physician/scientist at the Departments of Dermatology in Innsbruck and, later, in Vienna. In 1992, he was appointed professor and chairman of the Division of Immunology, Allergy & Infectious Diseases and, in 2016, of the entire Department of Dermatology of Vienna’s Medical University. He holds numerous honorary memberships in several national and
international dermatological (including the IPC) and immunological societies and is member of the Austrian and German Academy of Sciences as well as the US National Academy of Medicine. He has published more than 400 scientific manuscripts in the fields of clinical and investigative dermatology with a particular focus on immunodermatology and allergology as well as clinical, cellular and molecular immunology.

Professor Samiul Huq, MD, is a 1980 medical graduate from Mymensingh Medical College, Bangladesh. He completed a diploma in Dermatological Science and a master's in Dermatology from the College of Medicine under the University of Wales, Cardiff, UK. He then obtained his master’s in Public Health from North South University. Professor Samiul Huq worked as a registrar in dermatology in Saudi Arabia for an extended period. He received post-graduate training in the UK, where he gained advanced training in phototherapy. Before joining Square Hospital, he worked as a professor at ZH Sikder Women's Medical College Hospital. Professor Samiul Huq has many national and international publications. He is the founder and president of the Psoriasis Awareness Club, Bangladesh, affiliated with the International Federation of Psoriasis Associations. Mohammad Rafiqul Mowla, MBBS, MD

Mohammad Rafiqul Mowla, MBBS, MD is a Clinical Professor in Dermatology and Venereology and has a long-standing practice in institutional clinical setting.

Dr. Mowla serves as Associate Professor in the Department of Dermatology and Venereology at Chittagong Medical College, Bangladesh, where he directs the department's research department and mentors post-doc, graduate and undergraduate students. Currently, he is heading efforts in his department to initiate clinical trials in patients with autoimmune and inflammatory skin diseases to test drugs that were developed largely based on preclinical and translational research.

Dr. Mowla received the Global Education Award from the International Society of Dermatology, the Strauss & Katz Award from the American Academy of Dermatology, and the World Congress of Dermatology 2015 and 2019 Scholarship Award from the International League of Dermatological Societies.

He is an author of many publications in national and international scientific journals, original articles, clinical and scientific research studies, epidemiological reports and abstracts presented at national and international congresses. He has co-authored many scientific publications in reputed peer reviewed journals (JAAD, JEADV, IJD, CDJ, STI, CED, SHD, Dermatologic Therapy, Forum Dermatologicum, GJDV, JCMTA and BJDVL etc.) and has been serving as an editorial board member in three national and international journals.

Dr. Mowla is passionate about the Internet and its use for diagnostic teledermatology, medical education, and consumer health information. He is excited about the promise of artificial intelligence in widening access to dermatological expertise.

Jo Lambert is a senior full professor in dermatology and venereology, and academic chair of the Department of Dermatology at Ghent University, Ghent, Belgium. She is past president of the Royal Belgian Society of Dermatology and Venereology, member of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Belgium, board member of the Fondation René Touraine (FRT) Scientific Committee, past president of the Skin Inflammation and Psoriasis International Network of the FRT and chair of the EADV Task Force Psoriasis. Jo specialises in the fields of psoriasis and human skin pigmentation. Dr. André Vicente Esteves de Carvalho is responsible for the Psoriasis Ambulatory and a researcher at the Hospital Moinhos de Vento Complexo in Porto Alegre, Brazil. He is also a teacher at the Reumathology residency program at the same hospital, and a dermatology teacher at the Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos Medical school. He is currently (2021-2022) the coordinator of the Psoriasis Department of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology (SBD). Dr. Carvalho is a dermatology specialist certified by the Brazilian Society of Dermatology. He completed specialization courses in Dermatologic Surgery and Mohs micrographic at the Dermatology School at Yale School of Medicine (2001) and has a master's degree in pathology from the Universidade Federal de Ciências da Saúde de Porto Alegre. In 2016 he received his PhD in pathology from the Universidade Federal de Ciências da Saúde de Porto Alegre. The title of his thesis is “Eficácia das Medicações Imunobiológicas e Inibidores de Pequenas Moléculas na Psoriase: Uma Revisão Sistemática e Metanálise de Ensaios Clínicos Randomizados” (“Efficacy of Immunobiologic and Small Molecule Inhibitors Drugs for Psoriasis: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Randomized Clinical Trials”). Dr. Langley's research focuses on cutaneous melanoma, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, skin cancer and other inflammatory skin diseases. His work on melanoma involves an in vivo confocal scanning laser microscope - the first of its kind in Canada - which permits instantaneous high resolution images at the cellular level.

Dr. Charles Lynde is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto and holds a clinical teaching position at the University Health Network. He is the Medical Director of Lynde Institute for Dermatology and Lynderm Research. The Lynde Institute for Dermatology is a full service, interdisciplinary dermatology clinic. After receiving his B.Sc. and MD, degrees at the University of Toronto, Dr. Lynde studied Dermatology at the University of British Columbia and the University of Toronto, receiving his Board Certification (Canada and USA) in 1983.

Lynderm Research is under the guidance of Dr. Lynde as principal investigator for more than 30 years and over 300 clinical trials and is actively involved in the management of psoriasis, rosacea, onychomycosis, acne and atopic dermatitis among other dermatological conditions. Dr. Lynde has authored over 200 peer-reviewed articles.

Dr. Lynde has served in various roles for the CDA and AAD, including President of the Canadian Dermatology Association. He is the Editor of the CDA eBulletin and sits on the editorial boards of several journals and provides extensive consulting as well as being on the advisory boards of many pharmaceutical companies.

Dermatologist Dr. Yves Poulin, MD, FRCPC, is the president and founder of the Centre of Research in Dermatology, Quebec. After completing his medical training (MD, LMCC) at the Universite de Sherbrooke in 1978, which included qualifications to practice medicine in the United States (NBME), Dr. Poulin worked to obtain his title of dermatology specialist from the Universite de Montreal in 1983 by completing his specialty exams for Quebec (CSPQ), Canada (FRCPC) and the United States (FAAD). He also pursued additional specialist training in Washington (AFIP) and Rochester, Minnesota (Mayo Clinic). In 1993, Dr. Poulin began his work with clinical trials. Fernando Valenzuela , MD

Dr. Valenzuela is currently Associate Professor of Dermatology at the University of Chile in Santiago. He has received multiple awards from his medical school days to the present, in addition to working closely with Dr. Kim Papp in Probity Medical Research doing clinical trials. He is highly regarded by his colleagues in Latin America and attends all SOLAPSO and RADLA meetings where he is frequently featured as a main speaker. He has been working and publishing about tofacitinib, new agents in psoriasis, quality of life and comorbidities. He is the Chilean coordinator of Global Psoriasis Atlas, the President of 2022 RADLA and the Head of the Department of Dermatology at the University of Chile. Xuejun Zhang, MD, PhD

Dr. Zhang is a professor of dermatology and venereology at Anhui Medical University and director of the Key Lab of Dermatology for China's Ministry of Education. He received his medical degree from Anhui Medical College, a master of science degree from Anhui Medical University, and his doctor of philosophy degree from Shanghai Medical University. His research interests are genetics and the genomics of skin diseases. Dr. Zhang is a co-organizer of the journal Nature Genetics' Genome-Wide Association Study workshops. He is the chief editor of the textbook “Dermatovenereology” in Chinese. Among other professional memberships, he is chairman of the Chinese Psoriasis Committee. He has published 346 SCI papers including 23 Nature genetics. These papers have been cited 11,000 times by SCIE and 15,000 times by Google Scholar. H index is 54. More than 500 English books including 16 English textbooks and 45 entries of Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM) have cited these papers.

Dr. Zheng is professor and chief of the dermatology department at the Second Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine, in Hangzhou, China. After completing his medical degree at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, he finished his postgraduate training in dermatology at the Christian-Abrecht University in Kiel, Germany. After returning to China in 1996, he was promoted to the position of associate professor at Zhejiang Medical University. Dr. Zheng is vice president and executive committee member of the Chinese Society of Dermatology and a scientific committee member and Chinese national coordinator in the Psoriasis International Network (PIN). He has served as chairman of the Chinese Society for Psoriasis Research and as vice president of the Chinese Psoriasis Committee. He is an editorial board member of Experimental Dermatology and many Chinese dermatology journals, and has written for more than 320 publications. His research interests include mechanisms of inflammation, chemokine biology, and angiogenesis in inflammatory skin diseases. He has authored and co-authored several chapters in textbooks of dermatology and has been editor of evidence-based guidelines for the management of psoriasis in Colombia. In 2010, he received the national award for research in the XXVII and XXVIII National Congress of dermatology and dermatologic surgery respectively. He is an active member of the Colombian Association of Dermatology and Surgical Dermatology (AsoColDerma), the American Academy of Dermatology, and currently is the delegate for Colombia in the Latin America Society of Psoriasis (SOLAPSO). In 2017, the Annual Meeting of Latin American Dermatologists (RADLA) was held in Bogotá, and Dr. Gonzalez served as the congress president. Angela Londoño, MD

Dr. Londoño is the head of the dermatology program at CES University in Medellín, specializing in clinical and surgical dermatology. She graduated from the University Pontifica Bolivariana's dermatology program in 2004 and received her master's degree in epidemiology from CES University in 2009. She is the co-coordinator of the Colombian Group of Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis (ColPsor), a group of dermatologists and rheumatologists interested in promoting psoriasis knowledge and improving the quality of life of patients who have these conditions. The group is supported by the Colombian Association of Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery (Asocolderma). A founding member of the Latin American Society of Psoriasis (SOLAPSO), Dr. Londoño also served as editor of evidence-based guidelines for the management of psoriasis in Colombia in 2012 and 2015. She has participated in various psoriasis clinical trials and has authored various articles in national and international journals.

Alexander Egeberg, MD, PhD, DMSc

Dr. Egeberg is an associate professor and senior consultant at the Department of Dermatology at Bispebjerg Hospital, Copenhagen, Denmark, where he serves as the head of one of the largest psoriasis clinics in Northern Europe with more than 1,500 patients on biologic therapy, as well as the head of the psoriasis clinical trial unit. As a board-certified dermatologist, he earned his MD from the University of Southern Denmark and his PhD and doctoral degree of medical science (DMSc) from the University of Copenhagen. Dr. Egeberg also holds a post-graduate degree in Economics from Copenhagen Business School.

Having authored more than 250 international scientific publications, as well as several textbook chapters, he is an expert in inflammatory skin diseases with broad experience in epidemiology, real-world evidence, translational medicine, and clinical trials. From his involvement in global steering committees and as investigator in numerous global clinical trial programs, he has extensive knowledge about drug development, has served on global Data Safety Monitoring Boards, and has been acting advisor for the European Medicines Agency.

Claus Johansen, MSc, PhD, DMSc

Dr. Claus Johansen is an associate professor at the Department of Dermatology at Aarhus University Hospital, Aarhus, Denmark, where he is head of the research laboratory. He earned his MSc in Molecular Biology from Aarhus University in 1999 and obtained his PhD and doctoral degree of medical science from Aarhus University in 2003 and 2010, respectively. Dr. Johansen’s research area of interest is the immunological processes driving inflammatory skin diseases, mainly psoriasis, with a special focus on signal transduction and the role of specific lymphocyte subtypes in the skin. He received the New Investigator Award from the European Skin Research Foundation in 2009 and the LEO Foundation Gold Award for outstanding young skin researchers in 2011. Lone Skov, MD, PhD

Lone Skov is a professor and senior physician in the department of Dermatology and Allergy at the University of Copenhagen’s prestigious Herlev and Gentofte Hospital. She was awarded her professorship in Dermatology at the Faculty of Health Sciences from the University of Copenhagen in 2009 in recognition of her extensive contributions and training in the area of Dermato-venerology. Since 2013, she has even been a coordinating professor for one of the largest hospitals in the Copenhagen area.

Her current research includes projects investigating co-morbidity in psoriasis, primarily diabetes and cardiovascular disease, and clinical intervention studies in psoriasis. She is also working with immunological studies of eczema and psoriasis with characterization of lymphocyte subtypes, their function, their phenotype, and their regulatory mechanisms.

Lone qualified in Medicine in 1990 and went on to pursue a PhD, both at the University of Copenhagen. Her PhD work focused on superantigens as a possible activation mechanism for atopic dermatitis. Lone went on to complete her specialization in dermato-venerology in 2001 and a Doctorate of Medical Sciences in 2006. Lone has published more than 250 PubMed-cited articles.

Denis Jullien, MD, PhD, is Professor of dermatology and Head of the Department of Dermatology, Hôpital Edouard Herriot, Hospices Civils de Lyon, University of Lyon, in Lyon, France.

Professor Jullien received his medical degree, PhD and postdoctoral qualification from University Claude Bernard Lyon I (UCBL-I), having trained as a research fellow in the Department of Dermatology at the University of California, Los Angeles under Dr Robert L. Modlin. He completed his residency at one of UCBL-I affiliated teaching hospitals, becoming certified in Dermatology and Venereal Diseases in 1997.

Professor Jullien’s research and clinical interests focus primarily on inflammatory skin diseases (notably psoriasis) and the skin immune system. He was involved in the first human hand allograft project. Professor Jullien holds professional memberships with the French Society of Dermatology and college des Enseignants de Dermatologie, while also serving on the Scientific Board of the French Society of Dermatology, scientific Board and steering committee of the French Psoriasis prospective observational cohort PsoBioteq, scientific Board of the Psoriasis Group of the French Society of Dermatology.

Professor Jullien has also published a number of articles, and several chapters in textbooks, many of which focus on the pathogenesis and treatment of psoriasis, in a variety of international peer-reviewed journals, including The Lancet, Journal of Immunology, Journal of Clinical Investigation, Journal of Investigative Dermatology, Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology, among others.

Carle Paul is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Dermatology at Paul Sabatier University in Toulouse, France. The department has inpatient and outpatient clinics, a clinical research centre (phases 1–4), and teaching facilities. From 1998–2005, he worked in pharmaceutical research in Switzerland, while maintaining a clinical appointment at the Department of Dermatology in Mulhouse, France. During this period, Professor Paul worked on the development of dermatological drugs, mainly for psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, and fungal skin diseases. He contributed to the development of oral and topical calcineurin inhibitors for inflammatory skin diseases and allylamine antifungal agents. He was a board member of EADV from 2007-2012 and Secretary General from 2012 - 2016. Professor Paul is currently President of the EADV (2018–2020). He is co-inventor of 8 patents and author of >350 peer-reviewed publications. His areas of research interest are inflammatory skin diseases, pharmacology, and drug development.

Prof. Viguier heads the dermatology department and is a full professor at Hôpital Robert Debré and is also a professor at the University Reims-Champagne Ardenne. She received her medical degree from the University René Descartes Paris V in 1999, her PhD in immunology from the University Denis Diderot Paris VII in 2007, the habilitation à diriger des recherches (accreditation to supervise research) from the University Denis Diderot Paris VII in 2010. She previously served as an assistant dermatology professor at the Hôpital Saint-Louis and University Denis Diderot Paris VII. She has contributed articles to more than 100 peer-reviewed journals, including Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology, Journal of Investigative Dermatology, Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology and Acta dermato-venereologica. Prof. Viguier serves on the scientific board of the French Society of Dermatology and is president of the society’s Psoriasis Group. Prof. Dr. Matthias Augustin is a German physician, scientist and university lecturer at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf. Prof. Dr. Matthias Augustin studied chemistry at the University of Hamburg and medicine at the Universities of Hamburg, Milan, Freiburg, Basel and Boston. After further training in dermatology and venereology, he became senior physician and deputy director of the Department of Dermatology. In 2004, Augustin was appointed University Professor of Health Economics and Quality of Life Research at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf. In 2010 he established the Institute for Health Services Research in Dermatology and the Nursing Professions (IVDP) at UKE, of which he has been director since then. Since 2011, Prof. Augustin is a founding member of the Hamburg Institute for Health Economics (HCHE), the largest Center for Health Economics in Germany.

In his institute Prof. Augustin integrates clinical research, health services research and health economics with clinical practice. He is the director of several patient registries, including the German National Psoriasis Registry PsoBest. His main areas of clinical expertise are psoriasis, atopic dermatitis and other chronic inflammatory skin diseases, chronic wounds and vascular diseases. Further research areas include health geographics and urban development.

Prof. Augustin is the editor or author of over 60 medical books and has authored about 850 scientific articles. He is a senior consultant to the German Ministry of Health, to several Statutory health insurance companies and to a large number of companies in the health sector. He has been an expert to the German National Parliament (Bundestag), and he is the spokesman of the German Society for Dermatology to the German Federal Joint Committee (GBA) and to the Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Medicine (IQWiG).

Ulrich Mrowietz is a Professor of Dermatology and the founder of the Psoriasis Center in the Department of Dermatology at the University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein, Campus Kiel, Germany. The Psoriasis Center provides a large clinical trial unit and is part of the Comprehensive Center for Inflammation Medicine at the Kiel Campus.

Professor Mrowietz is the author or co-author of more than 375 peer-reviewed publications listed in the Medline database and numerous other publications in the field. His h-Index is 65. In addition, he is the author of chapters in multiple psoriasis textbooks, including Braun-Falco’s Dermatology and Venerology.

From 2004 to 2019, Professor Mrowietz was Editor-in-Chief of Archives of Dermatological Research. He is a former member of the Executive Board of the German Dermatological Society, a councilor of the International Psoriasis Council, a member of the scientific advisory board of the German Psoriasis Association, a member of the Clusters of Excellence “Inflammation at Interfaces” and “Precision Medicine in Chronic Inflammation,” and of numerous dermatological societies. Professor Mrowietz was President of the 6th World Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis Conference in June/July 2021 in Stockholm, Sweden.

He qualified in Medicine at the University Campus Bio-Medico in Rome, Italy, in 2007. He has been investigator for multiple clinical trials testing biologic therapeutics, new oral and topical drugs for inflammatory skin disorders.

He contributed as author to the most recent Italian Guidelines for the treatment of psoriasis and he has been involved in the Italian Registry for Biosimilars in Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis (Psobiosimilars registry).

He is author of more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and 4 book chapters. He was honored with the prestigious Leo-Pharma Research Silver Award in 2012.
